Chimney Caps - Covers & Downdraft Solutions

The multi cap is what it is, a great thing. This cap can be used for anything from a single flue to a bunch of flues either misaligned, broken, different heights, rounds mixed with squares, (you get the idea) and is easy to install.
Measuring is good, and be aware of the flue heights for proper draft.   Standard mesh height is 10" for these caps.
If a single flue or any flue within a group is 5" high or more, a taller mesh custom cap may be required.
 Installation will require some drilling. This cap has a flange that will be mechanically fastened via lags and screws to the top of the crown. A good feature of this cap is that the top is removable by 4 bolts that will allow access for chimney cleaning.
If you are burning wood, a 5/8" spark arrestor  mesh can be used, check your local Code.

Sometimes the most economical solution to a chimney flue downdraft, wind related puff back or chimney odor problem is a simple chimney cap.

Chimney Caps - Covers & Downdraft Solutions   Since these caps attach to the crown we like to recommend a size where the mesh of the cap is half way between the flues and the edge of the chimney.  Larger is better.

Try to keep the mesh at least 3-4 inches in from the edge as the flange adds 1 1/4" (all around) to the "foot print" of the mesh.  Don't worry about the lid of the chimney cap... it is not recommended that it overhangs the chimney.  Click to see some Job Photos

Lets climb that ladder once..... measure "everything" twice.

 Always measure a flue side to side, never corner to corner.

A flue may be square, rectangular, oval or round.  Measure accordingly.

Provide the inner and outer measurement to size other options such as top sealing dampers.

If the spacing between the flues is wide enough single caps may be used instead of double or multi flue caps.

If the flues are flush, recessed or it's just a "hole"... measure it's opening in the crown.
A & B  Measure to the OUTER most edge of the chimney's top.  The chimney's cement "crown".
C & D  Measure the span or OUTER most edge of each flue or group of flues.
E  Measure EVERYTHING else...spacing between the flues, the spacing to each edge of the chimney, etc.
H Measure the height of the flue or highest flue in the group.

 Flue Liner -- Usually a high temperature clay (fireclay).  A round, square or rectangular sleeve lining the interior of masonry chimneys.  This is the pathway in which the "smoke" or flue gases pass through to exit into the atmosphere.
(Some chimney were constructed with no clay liner or metal pipe was used as the flue pipe.)
**Always measure a flue side to side, never corner to corner.

Chimney Crown -- Also called a "wash"... is usually a cement topping around the flues and tapered to the chimneys sides to shed water. 
(Some crowns are tapered more than others and may create a more difficult cap installation.)
